Its opium production surged from around 180 tonnes in 2001 to more than 3,000 tonnes a year after the invasion, and to more than 8,000 by 2007. One reason the US strategy succeeded was that the surrogate war launched by the CIA did not disrupt the way its Afghan allies used the country’s swelling drug traffic to sustain their decade-long struggle.ĭespite almost continuous combat since the invasion of October 2001, pacification efforts have failed to curtail the Taliban insurgency, largely because the US simply could not control the swelling surplus from the country’s heroin trade. These funds, along with an expanding opium harvest, would sustain the Afghan resistance for the decade it would take to force a Soviet withdrawal. For the next 10 years, the CIA would provide the mujahideen guerrillas with an estimated $3bn in arms. In December 1979, the Soviets occupied Kabul in order to shore up their failing client regime Washington, still wounded by the fall of Saigon four years earlier, decided to give Moscow its “own Vietnam” by backing the Islamic resistance. It was during the cold war that the US first intervened in Afghanistan, backing Muslim militants who were fighting to expel the Soviet Red Army. Throughout its three decades in Afghanistan, Washington’s military operations have succeeded only when they fit reasonably comfortably into central Asia’s illicit traffic in opium – and suffered when they failed to complement it. In the American failure lies a paradox: Washington’s massive military juggernaut has been stopped in its steel tracks by a small pink flower – the opium poppy. How could this be possible? How could the world’s sole superpower have battled continuously for more than 16 years – deploying more than 100,000 troops at the conflict’s peak, sacrificing the lives of nearly 2,300 soldiers, spending more than $1tn (£740bn) on its military operations, lavishing a record $100bn more on “nation-building”, helping fund and train an army of 350,000 Afghan allies – and still not be able to pacify one of the world’s most impoverished nations? So dismal is the prospect of stability in Afghanistan that, in 2016, the Obama White House cancelled a planned withdrawal of its forces, ordering more than 8,000 troops to remain in the country indefinitely. A fter fighting the longest war in its history, the US stands at the brink of defeat in Afghanistan.

On the bright side, the export process has been slightly improved in the latest version of Lightroom, bringing the numbers back to what they used to be back in the LR2 and LR3 days. The latest version of Lightroom showed pretty disappointing figures, averaging around 47 minutes to generate the same previews. From there, everything pretty much went downhill – Lightroom 3.6 slowed down to 27 minutes, while Lightroom 4.4 onward slowed the process down significantly, adding a lot more time to the process. In version 2.7, Lightroom was able to build previews for 823 images very quickly, averaging around 21 minutes. Take a look at the second column, which represents the generation of 1:1 previews. However, the key difference in performance is NOT the import time. From there, the import time stayed roughly the same, with the latest 6.6.1 / CC 2015.6.1 release slowing down slightly, most likely due to added complexity of Lightroom catalog structure and added features. Lightroom 3.6 was a bit better in that regard, but the real performance improvement for importing images into a catalog was introduced in Lightroom 4, which cut the import time in half when compared to LR 2. Lightroom 2.7 was quite slow when adding images to a catalog, averaging around 35 seconds when importing 823 images. Images were exported in down-sampled resolution of 2048 pixels longĪs you can see, the results of my research are quite interesting. Let’s now take a look at the numbers and see how the different builds compare in terms of performance: Lightroom Version I repeated everything 3 times and averaged out the numbers for the table you see below. I used my phone’s timer to see how long the first and the second process would take. Images were extracted in smaller resolution, 2048 pixels long, with JPEG quality set to 100% and export sharpening set to “Screen” and “High”. During the import process, I set up the import dialog to add images into a brand new catalog for each release, then start the process of building 1:1 previews right after the import is complete: Nostalgia: Lightroom 2 Import Dialogįor the export process, I only exported a total of 250 images, since it was enough of a sample to test the length of the process. Images were mixed from different cameras such as Nikon D800, D4 and Df. This way, I did not have to worry about using cameras that are compatible with Lightroom 2. So how do we test this and compare the results? Due to potential camera compatibility issues, I converted a total of 823 images from their native RAW format to Adobe’s DNG format from my 2012 Lightroom catalog. With each new release, Adobe promises better stability and performance improvements. What I decided to do, is see how fast each version of Lightroom imports images, generates 1:1 previews and exports images. The results are quite interesting to say the least! So what do you do when you have all these versions of the software? Well, I installed them all on my Windows 10 PC and decided to give them all a try and see how much Adobe has been improving the performance of the software over the years. The big release was Lightroom 6 (CC 2015), which is the most current version, the latest release being Lightroom 6.6.1, or Lightroom CC 2015.6.1 if you use the cloud version of the software. From there, Lightroom CC 2014 was rolled out, which was equivalent to version 5.4 of LR standalone. With the release of LR 5, Adobe introduced Lightroom CC, which was the first cloud version of Lightroom. From there, it was Lightroom 4.4 that I used the most before Adobe released Lightroom 5. The next stable build I preserved was Lightroom 3.6. With the very first version of Lightroom having a few issues and not having 64-bit architecture support, I ended up deleting it, so the first release of Lightroom I actually preserved was Lightroom 2 (the latest build of that release was Lightroom 2.7). Ever since I started using Lightroom back in 2007, I have been keeping a backup of every single version on my computer, making sure that I had the latest version of that particular release. I once outlined how to use the generators for access to multiple bank soudfonts in a long thread about it here in the forum with Schneb but I do not know if it is still around. Now available for the Mac, CDxtract is a program/sample converter that supports virtually every single sample format both ways. Its a nice free synth but a real pain to figure out where to put all the files because it doesn't install itself and the files do not go where the files all other synths go. It allows you to use a multiple band soundfont in its generators. If you have soundfonts with multiple banks you can at least use CDXract to pull out the sound files and use them as loops one by one. I do not know how efficient the conversions are because I simply moved on to professional synths when SoundFont Synth died. for example - Ensoniq, Kurzweil, SampleCell Mac, Emu ESi v3, Roland S-50. The only software i found to convert giga studio was the emu translater with my proteous. CDxtract was designed for musicians who want to manage and convert their sampler libraries. When I load a converted bank I can Audition the sound but while playing it just doen't play the program correctly.Ĭan Translator, or any other program, translate the AKAI disks completely, dumping them to Emu drives ? Or do I must get another (working) SCSI CDROM drive ?Īnother question - Once I sample and create banks on the Emu - what is the best way to convert these to other sampler format (to use by softsamplers). It did fine (connected the Emu drive to the PC) BUT it only translated the sounds (wave files) but not the programs. I tried using Translator in order to copy AKAI CDs into the Emu Harddrive. I found that this does not work well, maybe due to the CDROM being old and cannot read CDs very well (although it did when it was connected in my PC - You can browse folders and banks, but loading banks either gives an error message or doesn't load the sounds). I got an E-mu E6400 Ultra to which I connected an internal old Yamaha SCSI CDROM, in order to download AKAI CDs into it. Icarus, however, is so overcome with the feeling of flight that he ignores his father and flies high into the air, where the wax melts and he plummets into the sea. Daedalus warns his son not to fly too close to the sun, or else the wax will melt. Traditionally, Icarus and Daedalus escape from prison using artificial wings made from wax and feathers. The defining moment in both the original myth of Icarus and in Field’s adaptation is Icarus’s fall. It was not so strange, then, that Field had succeeded in adapting the myth of Icarus to fit present day society. More specifically, the character of Icarus and the symbolism of his fall is inherently tied with human nature. Of course Icarus did not survive the fall, and even if he had, why would he have ended up in modern times? How is the classical period of the ancient Greeks even somewhat compatible with present day? However, as I thought more about it, I began to realize that many of the motifs expressed in the original myth continued to be expressed in Field’s adaptation, yet with a twist that fits the character of the modern age. “Such a Loser” comforts the inept subject of the song, encouraging the listener to “Throw your heart at it, so what if you break it?” The singers elaborate upon this theme with the lines “Icarus is bullshit, that’s why it’s called mythology/ People can’t stand genius without an apology/ F**k that, f**k them.” Even in their satirical mode, Garfunkel and Oates reject the same criticism of Icarus that Sexton does-the notion of hubris as a fatal flaw-instead choosing to employ the Icarus myth to celebrate confidence. At first, I found this concept very odd. The comedy-folk performers Garfunkel and Oates exhibit a similarly defiant tone and admiration of pride in their song “ Such a Loser.” However, Garfunkel and Oates emphasize these themes in a criticism of the Icarus myth, unlike Sexton. Sexton imparts a defiant reading of the original myth to her audience, arguing, “Who cares that he fell back to the sea?” ( l.12) in praise of Icarus’s boldness, mocking the tale’s cautionary reflection on pride. (See “ In Verse: Why Do Poets Care about the Icarus myth?” for more on Sexton’s work). Gift of Jane and Raphael Bernstein 2010.84.71Īnne Sexton’s poem, “To a Friend Whose Work Has Come to Triumph” also exaggerates the pride and audacity Icarus embodies. The artist exacerbates the blame on Icarus, or Lord Temple, for his misfortune in a short poetic inscription: “With Plumes & Wax, & such like things/ In quantities not small/ He tries to make a pair of Wings/ To ease his sudden Fall!” This is a reference to Temples alleged theft of office supplies like quills, but since Daedalus crafted the wings in the original myth, Icarus’s responsibility and incompetence are exaggerated with the charge that he created them. Icarus’s hubris, or pride, is a commonly held explanation for his fall, which Gillray easily translates to this scene of King George III as the sun melting Temple’s wings. In this cutting political satire, Gillray equates Temple’s dismissal with Icarus’s fall. Temple lost his administrative position when the King fired his uncle, the Prime Minister. Gillray’s Icarus is the obese Lord Temple, an entitled bureaucrat who was unpopular with King George III and his own peers in Parliament. For example, in his 1807 print The Fall of Icarus, English satirist and printmaker James Gillray exaggerated the notions of fault and foolishness from the original myth. How does satire work effectively with a tale like Icarus’s, defined by its serious subject matter? In the case of this particular myth, satire has both accentuated certain possible interpretations and subverted these potential meanings. She had a mischievous nature and a sneaky sense of humor. The comparison of CyberGhost versus PIA above is helpful if you only care about features and cost. You can use either VPN service on your router. You can use PIA on smart TVs, but the VPN service is careful to not guarantee its VPN will work with streaming devices for unblocking some countries’ content. You’ll get more app compatibility from CyberGhost, which works with Amazon Fire Stick, Android TV and Apple TV. Both CyberGhost and PIA support the usuals: Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and Apple iOS. The final comparison that could be of importance to you is compatibility. Although PIA has more than 35,000 servers across the world, CyberGhost has more than 9,000 servers evenly distributed across the world. Server location is important if you’re looking to access content from a specific country-CyberGhost has servers in 91 countries and PIA is set up in 84. With that said, even seven is more than most VPN services. If you have a lot of devices to protect with a VPN, Private Internet Access would be a better choice-you can connect up to 10 devices while CyberGhost only allows seven. By comparison, PIA doesn’t have a free trial, only allows 30 days on its money-back offer and you can only choose from one month, one year or three years for contract length. Also, CyberGhost offers a short free trial and 45-day money-back guarantee. However, CyberGhost gives you more term lengths, so you can choose one month or two years if you’d prefer. If you’re looking for the most affordable option, PIA takes the lead with its lower annual pricing. Beyond pricing and server location are features, such as dedicated IPs and malware protection. Private Internet Access, it isn’t immediately clear which one is best, so you have to figure out what’s most important to you. I've included a region hacked JP Sonic CD ISO image that will boot off of US Sega CD'sĢ. There is still a slight pause in the game.Īlso, due to many PM's and requests, I have done two extra things - on top of adding in the JP loop bits and 12 inch tracks.ġ. JP songs will now loop virtually seemlessly in MP3 players, if you so choose to leave them on endless loop. I've decided to integrate these 12 inch tracks, and JP loop bits into my custom soundtrack, to make an enhanced soundtrack. The reason this differs greatly from my old custom soundtrack is because I was searching around the net one day, and found there were a handful of 12 inch versions of Sonic CD US tracks, and there were also unused loop bits in the JP Sonic CD beta. It's also the fastest of the 2D Sonic games (thanks to the Super Peel Out,) with the best Time Attack records totaling 10:56'29 (also includes a high quality version of the Sonic CD intro FMV, as well as a region hacked Sonic CD JP iso + cue file )įeaturing 78 levels, two complete OST's, and the Super Peel Out (AKA best Spin Dash ever) That's really the problem with the US ost, it sounds all generic and depressing. In the J ost its a beautiful track with four different movements. The best example of the Japan ost being way better is the Quartz Quadrant present track. It really takes the Genesis Sonic sound and improves on it. I've always thought the Japan ost captures the feel of the levels a lot better, like Collision Chaos escpecially. I also like racing metal sonic to the Japan Stardust Speedway G mix. The US track is just a bunch of sound effects, while the Japan one makes good use of clips and sounds appropriate. (which I believe to be my JP intended version)I always thought the Japan boss music destroys the US one. It's just so cool that there's two soundtracks to cherry-pick from to make the best possible soundtrack. However, it does certain things just as good, and a few things better.Īnd the things the JP OST has that don't make sense, the US version does them so they make sense. The US soundtrack on the other hand, is by large bad. Such as the boss music, or the stage clear music. Some of the tracks like Wacky Workbench "G" or Metallic Madness "B" are basically, bad tracks.Īnd then there's tracks that make no sense. Like Palmtree Panic "G" and "P" are basically the same. I believe the JP OST to be the superior one as well. Much more fitting to the game, much more experimental, trippy, etc. IMO it is quite the hidden gem of the Sega CD itself, b/c so many people must have only played the US version & never even knew about the JAP version, w/ its FAR superior soundtrack IMO. But to me personally, the real hidden gem is the all-JAP version, which u also helped me get my grubby paws on. lolĮach of ur previous enhanced versions of Sonic CD have ALL been awesome. The new version itself sounds awesome it's just that I really don't like some parts of the US soundtrack to begin with, so the enhanced US soundtrack wd just go over my head, sadly. The new loop bits in the JP tracks should be interesting for you : )Yes the new loop bits is a very cool idea (haven't checked it out yet tho). I only included them as alternate files for people who do like/love Sonic Boom (go figure?) I like it in small doses, but it really has no place in the intro or ending videos. There is still a slight pause in the game. JP songs will now loop virtually seamlessly in MP3 players, if you so choose to leave them on endless loop. This is not only a cherry picked melding of the best tracks from the US and JP versions, but they're also enhanced with certain 12 inch versions of the US music, and the JP tracks unused loop bits added it. It's also the fastest of the 2D Sonic games (thanks to the Super Peel Out), with the best Time Attack records totaling 10:55'82 Sonic CD is the greatest 2D Sonic of all time.įeaturing 78 levels, two complete OST's, the Super Peel Out (AKA best Spin Dash ever), and a special stage that attempts to recreate the 2D Sonic experience in 3D (find the correct order of bumpers, springs, and enemies to finish the special stage the fastest). This means your jump and charge/release Sound FX will be much higher quality.Ĭonverted this mod to be used as the base building blocks for Sonic CD Restored!įinally released this as a mod for Sonic CD 2011! Updated this mod for the Sega CD with the music I had remastered from FLAC tracks and Restored quality Beta Loops plus an added bonus: Patched in an upgrade to the Sound FX to make them use the higher quality SN76489 sound chip instead of the Z80. |
